“Inspired by the massive Women’s Marches, encouraged by feminist organizations and energized by passionate volunteers, record numbers of women candidates—many of them first-timers—stepped forward to run for office in the midterm elections.
Victories by feminist women candidates shifted the balance of power in the House, accounting for more than 60 percent of Democrats’ gains. Historic breakthroughs define the newest incoming class of women, which includes the youngest women to ever serve in Congress,the first Native American and Muslim women to be sworn into Congress, the first black congresswomen from New England states and the first Latinas to ever represent Texas in Congress.
Among the ranks of the new women taking their place in Washington, D.C., are social workers, teachers, military officers and veterans, judges, lawyers and refugees. A pediatrician will be the only woman among 16 doctors in Congress. There are experts on the homeless crisis, early childhood education and human trafficking and a mother who lost her teenage son to gun violence.
The presence of more women in Congress will have important impacts on policy debates, given their different backgrounds and varied life experiences. They will bring much-needed perspectives and ideas to the ensuing battles over health care, reproductive rights, gun reform, immigration, the environment, voting rights, sexual harassment and assault, LGBTQ rights, military spending and foreign policy—and to the fight for women’s equality.”

5 Explosiones de resistencia en 2018.
No se puede negar que 2018 fue un año difícil para los derechos humanos.
El crecimiento significativo de partidos políticos populistas de derecha y fascistas amenazó la continuidad de derechos arduamente ganados en Brasil, Estados Unidos y muchos otros países alrededor del mundo.
Estas tendencias políticas han representado (erróneamente) como inevitables a los modelos fascistas, neoliberales y de otras formas de opresión. Algunxs han llamado a este fenómeno como fatiga política o fatiga de la «compasión», un desplazamiento hacia un lúgubre futuro distópico.
A pesar de esto, algunxs individuos y movimientos sociales se atrevieron a desobedecer y desafiar la norma para crear nuevas condiciones para sus comunidades.
Queremos reconocer a algunas de las acciones y victorias colectivas de los movimientos que han cambiado sus condiciones y que nos han inspirado a cambiar el mundo en 2018. Han demostrado que las narrativas feministas no son una utopía sino una realidad.

Nuevo y mejor financiamiento para los movimientos feministas
Primero lo primero: el activismo feminista no sería posible sin los recursos emocionales, intelectuales y materiales de lxs activistas. Para asegurarse estos últimos, los movimientos de todo el mundo han estado reclamando y creando los recursos que necesitan para generar el cambio de largo plazo.
Por ejemplo, este año hemos visto a muchos movimientos sociales generar recursos a través de canales autónomos. Esto incluye a las mujeres kurdas en Siria y a activistas de Polonia y Argentina. A través de poderosas acciones colectivas, sostuvieron movilizaciones masivas organizando sus propios recursos financieros, de tiempo o de conocimientos.
En los espacios bilaterales y multilaterales, hemos visto a los movimientos reclamar exitosamente por el financiamiento y los procesos que impactan en los derechos de las mujeres. Algunos hechos sobresalientes incluyen a la nueva Equality Funding Initiative [Iniciativa por la igualdad en el financiamiento] del gobierno de Canadá, que consiste en 300 millones de dólares, así como subsidios de gran escala para los fondos feministas, incluyendo a Astraea, el Fondo Africano para las Mujeres y el Desarrollo y el Fondo Ucraniano para las Mujeres. Además, la inversión de 500 millones de euros para terminar con la violencia contra las mujeres de la Spotlight Initiative, ha incorporado una serie de recomendaciones clave hechas por AWID y sus colaboradorxs, y lxs activistas feministas de todo el mundo están presionando para tener una participación relevante en todos los niveles de la Iniciativa.
Desde dentro de los movimientos feministas y más allá, la gente está trabajando en conjunto para crear un ecosistema del financiamiento feminista más transformador.
Irlanda revierte la prohibición del aborto
En mayo, Irlanda dio un enorme paso adelante para liberarse del control que la Iglesia Católica ejerce sobre los derechos reproductivos. El país votó en un referéndum para derogar la 8va. enmienda de la Constitución, la cual otorga igual derecho a la vida al feto y a la persona que lo gesta. Según el texto actual, el aborto está permitido sólo cuando la vida de la mujer está en peligro, pero no en casos de violación, incesto o complicaciones fetales fatales.

El resultado dio un mensaje muy claro: el 66.4% votó por el «sí», contra el 33.6% que votó por el «no».
Mientras se escribe este artículo, el Senado comenzará a debatir los detalles de la «Ley de Regulación de la Interrupción del Embarazo». El gobierno irlandés espera tenerlo para antes de Navidad, permitiendo que los servicios de aborto estén legalizados para el 1 de enero.
Actualización: El 14 de diciembre el Parlamento aprobó el proyecto de ley, es decir, que el aborto será legal en Irlanda.

Las normas feministas ganaron terreno en la ONU
Este año, lxs feministas también pelearon y ganaron importantes victorias dentro del sistema de las Naciones Unidas. En julio, lxs feministas tuvieron éxito en sus esfuerzos para que se incluyera lenguaje innovador sobre discriminación estructural, derechos sexuales y las obligaciones de los Estados en numerosas resoluciones. Además, varios países aprobaron en septiembre una resolución que es un hito en el tema de mortalidad y morbilidad materna.
Lxs expertos de la ONU también denunciaron la reacción violenta contra los derechos de las mujeres debidas a los fundamentalismos y al nacionalismo. Un buen ejemplo de esto: el Grupo de Trabajo sobre Discriminación Contra las Mujeres y la Relatora Especial en el campo de los Derechos Culturales hablaron sobre este tema y se reunió un grupo de expertxs para manifestar su apoyo a las defensoras de derechos humanos.
En octubre, durante las negociaciones para un tratado legalmente vinculante sobre corporaciones transnacionales y derechos humanos, los derechos humanos de las mujeres finalmente estuvieron en la agenda.
Se reconoció que los abusos de las corporaciones tienen impactos específicamente de género. Más de 350 grupos feministas y aliadxs de la sociedad civil respaldaron la declaración feminista por un tratado vinculante ( y no es demasiado tarde para sumarse).

Uruguay aprobó una de las leyes más progresistas que reconocen los derechos de las personas trans
El 19 de octubre, lxs legisladorxs uruguayxs aprobaron la «Ley Integral para Personas Trans». La ley propone la creación de políticas públicas específicas para reducir la discriminación permanente y sistemática que las personas trans enfrentan en sus vidas cotidianas. Las medidas pretenden integrar a las personas trans en todas las áreas de las que han sido históricamente excluidas: salud, educación, trabajo, cultura, economía, etc.
Algunas de esas medidas son: el derecho a acceder a cirugías de afirmación de género, que serán pagadas por el Estado uruguayo, lo mismo que los tratamientos hormonales. En relación al trabajo, se establece un cupo del 1% de los puestos laborales estatales para las personas trans que cumplan los requisitos de idoneidad. Además, el 2% de las becas serán otorgadas a la población trans.

Resistencia feminista ante el G20 en Argentina
La movilización feminista contra el G20 en Buenos Aires, Argentina, fue un poderoso momento de resistencia a las destructivas agendas neoliberales promovidas por los gobiernos más ricos del mundo, las instituciones financieras internacionales y las corporaciones transnacionales. En la Escuela de Economía Feminista, participantes de todo el mundo se reunieron para reclamar el conocimiento, en interés de la justicia social y de género. En tribunales populares organizados por el Foro, mujeres indígenas, negras y migrantes dieron testimonio público de los crímenes patriarcales y racistas cometidos sistemáticamente por los Estados y las instituciones financieras.
En un momento en que el empoderamiento de las mujeres está siendo cooptado por las agendas capitalistas y corporativas, presenciamos una manifestación de feminismo anclada en las luchas de base contra el patriarcado, la supremacía blanca y el neocolonialismo. Presenciamos la construcción de una realidad feminista de enseñar y aprender, buscando justicia y recibiendo reconocimiento, escuchando y practicando la solidaridad y, por supuesto, cantando, bailando y tomando las calles.

First and foremost, if you’re in the United States and voted in yesterday’s elections, thank you! We have unprecedented challenges to overcome, and in many ways, change starts and ends with our reality-based community of humanists, skeptics, and freethinkers taking part in the democratic process in full force.
A Democratically-controlled House of Representatives will help us to keep some of the worst theocratic and anti-science legislation off the federal law books. But we still face extreme religious-right measures coming out of states which means we are still heavily reliant on the judiciary to act as a check. Unfortunately right-wing gains in the Senate mean that extreme judicial appointments will have an even easier path to confirmation. All the more reason for us to keep showing up.
We were more than a little saddened to see White House counselor Kellyanne Conway using the Pittsburgh synagogue attack as an excuse to point an accusatory finger at church-state separation and the nonreligious. The attack was conducted by an anti-Semitic Christian extremist who went on a rampage against Jews. Conway’s feint was absurd on its face and dangerously manipulative at a deeper level.
We were surprised and relieved recently to find that after nearly a decade of persecution and incarceration, Pakistan’s highest court acquitted Asia Bibi of her blasphemy conviction and death sentence. And it was unfortunately not surprising that the U.S. Supreme Court decided to take up the Bladensburg cross case, which this conservative court may use to obliterate another section of the wall between church and state.
The day after Election Day is a good time to remember that not everything comes down to politics. In Los Angeles, CFI West is doing a wonderful job of showing how we can be a welcoming and life-affirming part of the larger community around us, incorporating meaningful aspects of religious traditions into a secular context with the first-ever Secular Day of the Dead.
And while there are powerful forces trying desperately to reverse political and social progress, scientific and technological progress continues apace. We’ll take a look at some advancements in robotics that are more than meets the eye.
Finally, we’ll let off some steam by having a good laugh at a prime target: ourselves. And who better to give skeptics a good roasting than the foremost expert on exotic species, Sir David Attenborough? Or at least, someone who sounds a lot like him...

The story we want to tell is not always the story that people hear.
The Catholic Church has run headlong into this problem—a problem entirely of its own making—as the ugly truth about sexual abuse continues to shake the Church at its foundations. And these foundations, as with those of all religions, are based on stories. Not just the ones in the Bible, but the story the Church tells about itself, in which it is the moral center of the universe. But its crimes and cover-ups are so many and so vast that the telling of them is drowning out the Church’s own hollow tales.
In Scotland, state-funded schools require students to take part in religious observances, telling a story about the country’s Christian heritage. But now that the majority of Scots are nonreligious, parents want their children to be told a different story, one about a Scotland that does not stigmatize those who no longer find the old stories relevant.
Not even Batman can control his own story. The Caped Crusader was revealed to be an atheist...or was he? That’s not the story the writer intended to tell. But as we’ll see this week, there is a lot of sense in the idea that superheroes, the gods among us, would find religion’s stories less than compelling.
It is also true that the story we want to hear is not always the story that’s being told. New research sheds new light on the curious overlap among creationists and conspiracy theorists, united in their desire to hear stories that are simpler than the truth and validating what they already believe.
Finally, this week we also learn more about the stories of our beginnings, as Carl Zimmer shows us a remarkable discovery about two different branches of prehistoric humanity, as well as our end, as we look into deep time to the darkness at the end of everything.

More than 100,000 people marched in London today in the name of equality and to stand up to bigotry, misogyny, racism and cruelty. We are standing with @womensmarchlondon and applaud their hard work to help organize this event and to send a strong message of unity to the world, refusing to normalize what can’t be made normal. The purpose of the Women’s March in 2017 was to make sure the incoming administration heard our voice and understood what we demand of them, and today we are proud to see that our voice has not been silenced, but has been amplified globally.#hearourvoice #hearourvote #bringthenoise#thankyou.

Wow...this is happening today.
For decades, tens of thousands of Irish women have been forced to travel to access safe and legal abortions. Today, Irish women are boarding planes to get to home to vote to remove – or repeal – the Eighth Amendment from its constitution - a piece of the Irish constitution that gives an embryo or a foetus an “equal right to life” to a pregnant girl or woman.
With this in mind, keep in mind that there are 12 days until our own election in Ontario.
