Hello!
First and foremost, if you’re in the United States and voted in yesterday’s elections, thank you! We have unprecedented challenges to overcome, and in many ways, change starts and ends with our reality-based community of humanists, skeptics, and freethinkers taking part in the democratic process in full force.
A Democratically-controlled House of Representatives will help us to keep some of the worst theocratic and anti-science legislation off the federal law books. But we still face extreme religious-right measures coming out of states which means we are still heavily reliant on the judiciary to act as a check. Unfortunately right-wing gains in the Senate mean that extreme judicial appointments will have an even easier path to confirmation. All the more reason for us to keep showing up.
We were more than a little saddened to see White House counselor Kellyanne Conway using the Pittsburgh synagogue attack as an excuse to point an accusatory finger at church-state separation and the nonreligious. The attack was conducted by an anti-Semitic Christian extremist who went on a rampage against Jews. Conway’s feint was absurd on its face and dangerously manipulative at a deeper level.
We were surprised and relieved recently to find that after nearly a decade of persecution and incarceration, Pakistan’s highest court acquitted Asia Bibi of her blasphemy conviction and death sentence. And it was unfortunately not surprising that the U.S. Supreme Court decided to take up the Bladensburg cross case, which this conservative court may use to obliterate another section of the wall between church and state.
The day after Election Day is a good time to remember that not everything comes down to politics. In Los Angeles, CFI West is doing a wonderful job of showing how we can be a welcoming and life-affirming part of the larger community around us, incorporating meaningful aspects of religious traditions into a secular context with the first-ever Secular Day of the Dead.
And while there are powerful forces trying desperately to reverse political and social progress, scientific and technological progress continues apace. We’ll take a look at some advancements in robotics that are more than meets the eye.
Finally, we’ll let off some steam by having a good laugh at a prime target: ourselves. And who better to give skeptics a good roasting than the foremost expert on exotic species, Sir David Attenborough? Or at least, someone who sounds a lot like him...

The story we want to tell is not always the story that people hear.
The Catholic Church has run headlong into this problem—a problem entirely of its own making—as the ugly truth about sexual abuse continues to shake the Church at its foundations. And these foundations, as with those of all religions, are based on stories. Not just the ones in the Bible, but the story the Church tells about itself, in which it is the moral center of the universe. But its crimes and cover-ups are so many and so vast that the telling of them is drowning out the Church’s own hollow tales.
In Scotland, state-funded schools require students to take part in religious observances, telling a story about the country’s Christian heritage. But now that the majority of Scots are nonreligious, parents want their children to be told a different story, one about a Scotland that does not stigmatize those who no longer find the old stories relevant.
Not even Batman can control his own story. The Caped Crusader was revealed to be an atheist...or was he? That’s not the story the writer intended to tell. But as we’ll see this week, there is a lot of sense in the idea that superheroes, the gods among us, would find religion’s stories less than compelling.
It is also true that the story we want to hear is not always the story that’s being told. New research sheds new light on the curious overlap among creationists and conspiracy theorists, united in their desire to hear stories that are simpler than the truth and validating what they already believe.
Finally, this week we also learn more about the stories of our beginnings, as Carl Zimmer shows us a remarkable discovery about two different branches of prehistoric humanity, as well as our end, as we look into deep time to the darkness at the end of everything.

More than 100,000 people marched in London today in the name of equality and to stand up to bigotry, misogyny, racism and cruelty. We are standing with @womensmarchlondon and applaud their hard work to help organize this event and to send a strong message of unity to the world, refusing to normalize what can’t be made normal. Wow...this is happening today.
For decades, tens of thousands of Irish women have been forced to travel to access safe and legal abortions. Today, Irish women are boarding planes to get to home to vote to remove – or repeal – the Eighth Amendment from its constitution - a piece of the Irish constitution that gives an embryo or a foetus an “equal right to life” to a pregnant girl or woman.
With this in mind, keep in mind that there are 12 days until our own election in Ontario.

Toda discusión entre feministas y no feministas es bienvenida, para quienes nos consideramos feministas el dialogo es nuestro recurso; porque si en algo ha alcanzado el feminismo es crecer en la pluralidad y la diferencia y en esa diferencia… nos multiplicamos.

Leyendo el manifiesto de algunas mujeres francesas, cada párrafo tiene un peso inmenso que requiere mucha cautela, su mirada confunde porque sobre el cuerpo de la mujer acosada o abusada no va más allá del episodio intimo molesto individual o de la torpeza del sexo opuesto; si esto no se reconoce el problema es grave; como también el no reconocer que el abuso y el acoso está instalado en el imaginario como lo normal, y que en ultimas se convirtió en una costumbre.

“Como mujeres, no nos reconocemos en este feminismo que, más allá de la denuncia de los abusos de poder, toma el rostro del odio hacia los hombres y la sexualidad”

No es tan difícil hacer una línea divisoria entre el abuso sexual y el acoso o la violación a la incapacidad o la inapropiada idea de la conquista; como lo anote anteriormente, aquí no se trata de individualizar los casos y mezclar la sensualidad que a mi manera de ver está inmersa en nuestra naturaleza humana tanto de los hombres como de las mujeres y que no es el caso poner en discusión; aquí no hay prejuicios sobre la sexualidad, no se está sancionando; al contrario la llaman por su nombre e invitan a las mujeres a elegir, decir SI o NO, decidir por ella si lo desea, asumir su cuerpo libre y sin fantasmas, abogarla si quiere, la sexualidad es un derecho.

Puritanas? no hay tal ; la campana ME TOO y TIMES UP es el resultado de la urgencia de hacer público lo que por centurias ha sido silenciado por las sociedades patriarcales. Me temo que calificar a ME TOO y TIMES UP de timoratas o puritanas no es un nuevo debate, ya lo han planteado algunas feministas españolas como Amelia Valcarcel con argumentos que fraccionan.

Sobra decir que esta calificación de puritanas tampoco hoy está inscrita con lo que paso en el siglo XVI en la historia del pasaje religioso; donde los puritanos insistían en la conversión para exonerar el error y el pecado y adherirse a las reglas de la moralidad.

Talvez en lo único en que estaríamos de acuerdo es el reconocimiento que las iglesias y los fundamentalistas religiosos son los agresores a la libertad sexual, ellos con sus coacciones, amenazas, privación, contradicciones, son instrumentos no menos salvajes y que también son violencia hacia las mujeres.

El movimiento ME TOO y TIMES UP ya no es solo una campaña, al presente es un movimiento que hoy contribuye al dialogo, en menos de unas semanas hemos empezado a escuchar a las víctimas; este es solo el comienzo y sabemos que habrá una gran batalla; nuestro compromiso, derribar el patriarcalismo.

2017 El año donde las mujeres fuimos las protagonistas; comenzó con la movilización en 21 de Enero un día después de la posesión de Trump, ese día se marcó un hito en la historia del Feminismo y de los movimientos de mujeres; millones de mujeres alrededor del mundo salimos a las calles a protestar contra Trump y por nuestros derechos; la movilización en Washington fue una de las más multitudinarias marchas en la historia de los EU, asistí como parte de la delegación de 500 mujeres Canadienses. La consigna central fue “is What a Feminist Looks Like; el 56% de las mujeres en EU se reconocen como feministas sumándose a las labores de concientización y apoyo, adicional a esto el soporte de hombres que asumen para si el feminismo.

Así, el inicio del año comienza con las mujeres del mundo retando al presidente Trump por su política conocida como retardataria, misógina y de extrema religiosidad exhibida en toda su campaña y en manifestaciones antes y después como presidente; los hechos confirmaron lo que suponíamos vendría en detrimento de las mujeres como también el deterioro de la democracia en los EU. Los expertos dicen que sus medidas facturadas en estos largos meses han decapitado la esencia de unas de las más conocidas democracias del mundo.

También se dice que “Trump ha acabado con la autoridad moral de la presidencia” sus continuas rabietas, sus incontenibles tweets y comentarios a priori en detrimento aun de sus más cercanos amigos; sus ataques absurdos sobre la noticias factas llamándolas falsas; sus mentiras desmedidas y arcaicas; todavía el mundo civilizado se pregunta porque este señor está sentado en la silla de la presidencia de los EU.

En Octubre 2017 ocurre el caso del famoso Weinstein ahora llamado el efecto dominó que rompió definitivamente el silencio y el ocultamiento del acoso y abuso sexual en el mundo del cine, deportes, tv, actores, periodistas, políticos, que hoy están en lista en los periódicos más leídos en el mundo como The Globe and Mail donde no solo aparecen los denunciados recientemente sino también los que han pagado fortunas para silenciar las voces de sus víctimas, como el caso de el comentarista de FOX Bill O’Reilly quien ha pagado $36 millones de dólares en 6 demandas, y en donde su conducta de depredador ha sido reportada mucho antes que las de Weinstein; también están en la lista los poderosos hombres ya despedidos por empresas y o multinacionales, descritos como depredadores sexuales y que sus nombres no habían sido profusamente publicados en la prensa tan detalladamente.

Viene seguidamente la campaña # ME TOO que ha generado finalmente el reconocimiento al abuso y el acoso a la mujer; también Canadá abre otro capítulo en las denuncias contra famosos directores de teatro, cine y deporte, el campo militar.

Estas campañas iniciadas en Hollywood como la iniciada hace menos de una semana y lanzada oficialmente anoche en The Golden Globe Awards, la celebro, si… la aplaudo como un paso enorme en el mundo del cine y TV; después de todo la influencia que ejerce el cine y la televisión es inmenso, no hay duda que trasciende y difunde; por eso TIME’S UP - SU TIEMPO TERMINO ¡!! ha despejado la nube y el silencio de la lacra real que hemos sufrido las mujeres.

Hoy llegamos a un momento importante, un momento que debemos conservar y continuarlo,2018 y en adelante; los poderosos hombres depredadores sexuales ya están en la mira, ya se nombran, están en las listas, seguiremos nombrándolos. Las feministas podemos decir que definitivamente esa epidemia del abuso sexual que se hospedó en el imaginario social como lo común y lo normal, salió finalmente a flote, y tengámonoslo por seguro ya no hay reversa!!!
